Rewarding the Small Things

Something wonderful happened last week while getting the kids ready for AWANA that made me want to remember to start rewarding the small things.

We were all scrambling last minute (as we always seem to do) to get everything together:

Does everyone have their clothes on?
Does everyone have socks on?
Does everyone have their AWANA vest/shirt on?
Does everyone have their dollar to pay their dues?
Does everyone have their AWANA books?
Does everyone have their AWANA bags?
Does everyone have their Bibles?
Am I forgetting anything? Oh! Does everyone have their hair brushed/combed?

So during that chaos, my oldest son was looking for his Bible. He used to have a little Precious Moments one, but I think that one was getting pretty ratty, so I think it got tossed. So Daddy suggested that he use one of his sister’s Bibles. She had a purple one with a flower on it and a pink Precious Moments one.

Daddy suggested that he take the purple one, because he thought it wasn’t quite as girly looking as the pink one. But my daughter really felt a strong attachment to the purple one, and proceeded to make that very clear to everyone with in hearing distance.

My dear, kindhearted son, who could have easily insisted on taking the one Daddy had suggested, saw the distress that his sister was going through, and decided to let her have her favorite purple Bible and he would take the girly pink one. How selfless!

We were so very proud of him that we decided to do something extra special for him as a reward for his selflessness. During AWANA, I went to the Christian bookstore near us and purchased a Bible in his favorite color: blue. Then, as I was checking out, the clerk asked if I wanted to engrave a name on the front cover. I thought, “Oooo! Now that would make this reward even cooler!”

So when we got home from AWANA, I was all excited to give my son this reward, but he was so tired that he fell asleep immediately upon getting into bed! That hardly ever happens, so I knew he was very exhausted. I decided reluctantly to wait ’til morning. I really wanted to give him his gift right then ‘cuz I couldn’t wait to see the excitement on his face when he saw his name on the front cover!

The next morning Daddy and I called him over and told him how proud we were of him for being so kind to his sister the previous night. I could see by the look in his eyes that he was proud of himself, too. His eyes got so big as he opened the box and he shouted, “A BIBLE!!!”

This week he has been anxiously anticipating AWANA again so that he can bring his new Bible with him. He’s been taking great care to keep it in its box and to carefully turn the pages so they don’t rip or bend.

I wonder if God feels the same excitement when His children are obeying Him and doing what is right. Does He feel the same anticipation that I felt when looking forward to giving my son his reward? I have a mind to think He does! I think God likes rewarding the small things, too.

I’m Back! Christmas Knitting Had Me Preoccupied!

Wondering where I’ve been for the last few days? I haven’t done my usual daily post, I admit it. But I really do have a good reason…. besides being a busy homeschooling mom of five! I’ve been busy doing some Christmas knitting!

Christmas season is fast approaching. I was reminded of this fact when my sister sent me the annual “Christmas List”. In our family, we have a tradition of drawing names for Christmas. Each person is “assigned” one other person to get (or make) a Christmas present for. My sister graciously draws the names every year and sends out the completed list.

So when I saw the list in my inbox, I pretty much started to panic, because I’m the Aunt/Sister/Daughter/Mother/Wife/Friend that likes to knit the gifts I give. I try to come up with something special for each person that is on the family list, and occasionally, if I have a little extra time, for friends on my list as well.

Now I’m sure you’re probably thinking, “Whew! I’m glad I’m not on her list!” Because nobody like to get an uncool knitted sweater that you’ll never wear for Christmas! But I’m not that kind of knitter. I try to think of things that my family already uses and that could be made by knitting it. Like last year, I made a hat in the style that my sister-in-law already really enjoys. I asked her what her favorite colors were, and made it with those colors as the accent.

For kids, I often make some kind of toy or game. Once I made a rocket ship, complete with a couple astronauts and a couple silly aliens that could ride inside it. My boys still love playing with it, and that was about four years ago!

Right now, the project that is preoccupying my time is a pair of ballerina slippers that my cousin requested for her daughter. I had made some for her several years ago. Now that her daughter is a little older, she thought it would be cute to have matching ones for her. I luckily still had a little of the same yarn left over from the slippers I had made my cousin. So now I’m just trying to get the size right. I’ve completed one, but the size is a tad small so I’m thinking I should rip it out and try a different size needle. (But that’s getting kinda technical. If you want to see my progress you can go to KnittingNicelysYarn.com. I’ll be posting my pictures there and getting into more detail about the process.)

So I hope I haven’t completely lost your interest by dropping off the face of the earth. I’ll try to get my consistency up again. Might be shorter posts, though. :)

Happy Christmas knitting!

Healthy Eating Options – Why is Eating Healthy Important for My Kids

Healthy Eating Options

Cute Caleb Enjoying His Apple

Here’s a little slice (no pun intended) of what healthy eating options I give my kids for lunch and my answer to “Why is eating healthy important for my kids?”

My kids are constantly hungry. Literally minutes after finishing a meal, they are asking me what I am making for the next meal. So apparently their little bodies are using up every little bit of the food they eat. That is why I believe it is extremely important for me to pay close attention to what is going into those sweet little mouths and to give them healthy eating options!

So what does that mean for our family? It means that I refuse to fill my kids’ bellies with junk food. Instead, each meal is well-thought out to include a grain, a fruit and/or vegetable, and a meat or protein.

What does this look like on a daily basis? Here’s a good example of what I feed my kids for lunch. The “main course” consists most days of a sandwich, made of either peanut butter and jelly or meat and cheese. When it’s a pb and j, I try to go light on the jelly, so they aren’t getting too much sugar. On good days, I can coax them into eating a slice of tomato with the meat and cheese sandwiches, but that’s sadly not too often.

The side dishes are where many people go wrong. It’s very easy to open a bag of chips and let those little fingers dig in. And for some reason, kids just love to devour a ton of them. But are they really healthy eating options? In our house, the usual sides are made up of a piece of fruit, like an apple or pear or peach.

Then if those bellies still aren’t full (which is 99% of the time), I give them some type of nut mix made up of things like peanuts, cashews, almonds, walnuts, raisins, etc. I don’t mind a few sweet surprises in the trail mix, like a few chocolate chips or chocolate candies or marshmallows, but, again, I try not to go overboard. My kids have an endless supply of energy, and a little sugar goes a long way!

Don’t misunderstand me, though. There are days when I fail to give them healthy eating options, and instead slide into the easy route of chips and prepackaged foods. But I try to keep these for days when I’m truly pressed for time or when I am very sick and just getting them fed is a chore.

What about dessert? Hmmm… that’s exactly what my kids ask almost every mealtime! I don’t have a problem with desserts. But I like to keep them as a special thing for special occasions, like birthday parties or Thanksgiving pie. (yum!) Desserts on a daily basis are not really a healthy way of eating. And it takes the specialness away from the dessert.

You’re probably wondering why my kids ask for dessert every mealtime, if my philosophy on desserts is to be something special on occasion. Well, I have to admit that I haven’t been the best at restricting the desserts in the past. I have gotten much better at standing my ground, but the memory of that sweetness after the meal still lingers in their sponge-like minds. Will they ever forget? Doubt it. But if I resolve to keep training them in healthy eating habits, I believe they will be more likely to stick to that in their adulthood.

If you are trying to give your kids healthy eating options, here’s a few things to keep in mind:

1. Try to avoid prepackaged foods.
2. Always go with fresh first.
3. Make a balanced meal of fruit/vegetable plus meat/protein plus bread/grain.
4. Cut down on the sugary stuff.
5. Offer crunchy nuts or baby carrots instead of chips or pretzels.
6. Make food fun! Cut out sandwiches into shapes, or make a happy face on the plate with the food you are serving.

If you have some yummy and nutritious food ideas for kids, I’d love to hear about them! Please share in the comment box!

Productivity Tip List That Everyone Can Use

Productivity Tip List

Business man who didn't read his productivity tip list!

Whether you’re running a homeschool, running a business, or just running to get fit or stay fit, this productivity tip list can help you accomplish your goals and get the most out of every day. In this list, I will use homeschooling as an example, but these productivity tips can be used in all areas of your life.

Productivity Tip #1

Make a plan. Each night before you go to bed, make a plan for what you want to accomplish the next day. Get specific, but don’t list too many things. You want to make a plan you will be able to actually accomplish. In homeschooling, I plan out the full year on a schedule during the summer. Then each night, I go over what is scheduled for the next day, so my mind can start preparing and thinking about how I will teach the lessons prepared.

Productivity Tip #2

Set a time limit for each activity. A good way to make sure you don’t go over the time you planned for the activity is to set a timer. When the timer goes off, stop whatever you are doing. I usually schedule each segment to be about 60 minutes. If there is an extra amount of pages assigned for Language or Math, though, I will allow more like 90 minutes. If you haven’t finished what you planned for that segment of time, reschedule it for the next day or for later that day.

Productivity Tip #3

Don’t try to multitask. It takes the brain a while to adjust to a new task, so it is better to focus on one thing at a time, rather than three or four. You can accomplish more by focusing on one thing instead of scattering your focus onto several things. In homeschooling, this would translate into trying to do more than one subject at a time. I often struggle with this productivity tip, because if I am correcting let’s say Math, I tend to want them to fix their mistakes it right away, instead of waiting for them to finish the subject they have started working on after Math. I need to remember to let them focus on each subject one at a time. If they have mistakes, I can show them the corrections after they have finished the schoolwork for the day.

Productivity Tip #4

Avoid distractions. This one, for me, seems almost impossible. As a stay at home mother of five, I’m constantly bombarded with, “Mom! I need this” and “Mom! I need that!” or with breaking up fights or comforting the baby. But it can be accomplished some days. I find the easiest time for me to do this productivity tip is at night when everyone is asleep in their beds. It’s quiet and no one is demanding my constant attention.

Productivity Tip #5

Create a routine. When you establish a routine, you will begin to be able to do things with out thinking about them. Establishing a routine also helps you get into the flow of the day and you will accomplish much more. With my children, routine helps them know what to expect during each time of day. My school days are very similar. We start the day with making beds and getting dressed. Then it’s breakfast time and clean-up after breakfast. Each day starts with the same subject, Bible, and we go through each subject in order: Language, Math, History and Geography, and Science. You can choose whatever order or schedule works best for your family or your situation. Just make sure it is scheduled, so you can get into a habit.

Productivity Tip #6

Take breaks! This productivity tip is especially hard for me. I have an inward drive that tells me to keep going, keep going, get in done! But I have found that break times are very helpful. They can refresh your mind and help you prepare for the next task. This break time can be used to go outside for a little fresh air or to grab a drink of water or a snack. We try to take about a 10 minute break after each subject, which is scheduled for about an hour. It’s a good idea to use a timer for the break times, too, so that the break time doesn’t become a break down of the entire school day!

Productivity Tip #7

Speaking of drinking water…. drink water!!! This productivity tip may seem kind of silly for those who naturally drink water throughout the day. But for those, like me, who forget sometimes to stay hydrated, it is an important one. When you get dehydrated, you lose brain power and focus. Make sure the kids are drinking plenty of water, too!

Productivity Tip #8

Exercise. Yup, I said it. Exercise. This is a tough one for many people. It’s hard to take that minimum of 15 minutes a day to get your heart pumping when you feel like you could be doing something more productive. But without exercise, you will be less productive during the times you are working. Exercise gives you energy and helps you sleep better at night. So make sure to schedule the time for exercise each day, and once again, don’t forget the kidlets!

Productivity Tip #9

Eat healthy foods. Junk food is easy. But is slows down your mind. It also reeks havoc on your health. And guess what? When you are sick… you aren’t productive! When you eat right, your energy levels will be given a boost, and your brain will be powered to work efficiently. It’s important to offer kids healthy foods, too. Junk foods will cause them to loose focus on their work because their bodies are so pumped up with sugar. Eat a balanced meal and your productivity levels will go up.

Productivity Tip #10

Get rest. Sleep is an important part of being productive, although, once again, this one is a struggle for me. I have a tendency to be a night owl, which can cut severely into my sleep. Adults are supposed to get at least 8 hours of sleep a night. I know that seems like a lot for some of you, but it really is important to get a good amount of rest. And not only are the number of hours important, but also the routine. It’s best to get yourself into a habit of waking up at about the same time and going to bed at about the same time every day. Kids will also benefit greatly with this sleep pattern. Our kids routine, for example, is bedtime at 8pm and wake-up time at 7am.

Productivity Tip #11

Make time for extracurricular activities. Family and friends are an important part of your life, so make sure you schedule time to spend with them. With homeschooling, I know that I can get so focused on schoolwork that it easily could take me away from spending family time. Scheduling for a game night, or a movie night, or a date night with hubby is a great way to relax and let the people in your life know that they are important to you. Go to the zoo or a museum and really have fun with the people you love. Remember the great quote, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” (Hope I quoted that right!)

Productivity Tip #12

Spend time on personal development. Many people shrug this productivity tip off, thinking, “How could that make me more productive?” But of all the productivity tips, this is one of the most important. If you don’t have your mind in the right place, you will not accomplish what needs to get done. For me and many other Christians, reading the Bible and developing my personal relationship with God is a must every day. Try to spend at least half an hour each day focusing on growing as a person. Developing this aspect of your life will transfer to the rest of your life and cause you to be more productive.

So there you have it! If you use these productivity tips in your life, you will find yourself accomplishing goals quicker and more efficiently. And as a bonus, you will enjoy life more!

Baby Wakes Up at Night – What’s a Mom to Do?

Baby Wakes Up At Night

My six month old wide awake!

My six month old baby wakes up at night around 10:30, and then decides it’s time to stay awake for the rest of the night. So what does a mom of five young children do when this happens for over a week?

Baby Wakes Up at Night Rule #1

Don’t get frustrated! I know that sounds easier said than done, and believe me, I haven’t obeyed that rule very well myself. When you have a baby waking up in the night and you are dead exhausted from a long day of homeschooling, cleaning, cooking, doing laundry, cooking some more, cleaning some more, etc., etc…. (you get the picture), you don’t have a lot of patience in reserve, that’s for sure! But you have to remember that sleep for a 6 month old is sometimes reversed and it’s not going to last forever.

Baby Wakes Up at Night Rule #2

Encourage baby to go back to sleep. When my six month baby wakes up at night, the first thing I do is try to get him back to sleep. Here’s the list of things I usually try:

  • nurse him back to sleep
  • pat him gently on the back
  • offer him a binky
  • rock him gently in a dark room
  • softly play some relaxing music
  • lay down with him on my tummy so he can relax to my heartbeat

I go through this list pretty much in the order above, but sometimes it just doesn’t work. Which leads to….

Baby Wakes Up at Night Rule #3

When nothing is working, just go with the flow. Usually after about two hours of trying the above list and my six month old still doesn’t want to sleep, I will get up with him and just let him play for a while. This solves more than one problem. It causes me not to feel as frustrated because then I feel like at least I’m getting something done, instead of just laying there waiting for baby to fall back to sleep. It also allows my poor husband to get a little rest, because when baby is not sleeping through the night, you can bet hubby is not sleeping through the night! He may seem to be still asleep, but he’s often told me that he doesn’t feel rested in the morning when the baby wakes up at night.

Baby Wakes Up at Night Rule #4

Use this quiet time with no other kids around to get something done! As a mother, you know that a little quiet time to really focus on something is a precious commodity. So why not use the time that your baby is awake at night to do just that? In my case, I usually get a little reading done, or I do exactly what I’m doing right now…. writing a blog! I’m here for the baby if I start to notice him winding down, but I also am accomplishing something and using my time awake wisely.

Baby Wakes Up at Night Rule #5

Find someone to help with your other children, should you have any, in the morning. I am blessed to have a husband that works at home and is willing to spend a few hours in the morning getting the rest of my kids fed and ready for the day when the baby is not sleeping all night. But if you don’t have that luxury, I recommend finding someone who would be willing to help you out. Your mom, or a close friend can be a lifesaver in situations like this. Just make sure you ask! I know it’s hard because you may feel like a burden, but believe me, it is worth it to have those few extra hours of sleep when you’ve been up all night with the baby!

Baby Wakes Up at Night Rule #6

Enjoy! I know that doesn’t sound possible in the middle of the night when you are soooo tired and just want to sleep. But remember that these days are few and fleeting. Before you know it, your little six month old baby will be a teenager, and instead of keeping you awake because he’s not sleeping through the night, he’ll be keeping you awake because he’s out with his friends all night. At least while he’s a baby, you get to spend the wee hours of the morning with him instead of worrying about him!

Hope this has been an inspiration to you as you deal with your baby waking up at night! May you be blessed as you care for your little one with love and patience.

A Fun Shake and Share Party with Shakeology

Shakeology_Chocolate

Chocolate Shakeology

Yesterday was my first Shakeology Shake and Share party! It wasn’t a huge gathering, but we still had lots of fun. Instead of going down to the basement, I decided to do a little more intimate party in our living room.

The first game we played was called Alphabet Fruit. I gave each participant a sheet of paper to write down as many fruits as they could think of for each letter of the alphabet. I started with “A” and gave everyone thirty seconds to come up with as many fruits as they could, starting with that letter. The definition I gave for fruit was “the part of the plant that has the seeds in it.” So, by that definition, I allowed things like cucumbers, tomatoes and zucchini, which are normally thought of as vegetables.

I was surprised at how many fruits everyone was able to come up with! I guess I had some pretty smart guests! The winner received a prize, which was a Shakeology shaker cup and a packet of Greenberry Shakeology and a packet of Chocolate Shakeology.

I then used my computer to show them the “100 Doctor’s Don’t Lie” video about Shakeology from the Beachbody website. It is a very informative video that tells all about Shakeology and how so many doctors recommend it because of its unique ingredients and health benefits. I have my computer connected to my wide-screen television, so it was quite comfortable for everyone to view the video.

As the video was playing, I went into the kitchen and prepared my favorite Greenberry Shakeology recipe and my husband’s favorite Chocolate Shakeology recipe. In the Greenberry Shakeology, I put a banana, about five frozen strawberries, a cup of milk, and about half a cup of ice. In the Chocolate Shakeology I put a banana, about five frozen strawberries and a cup of milk.

After the video was done playing, I invited everyone to have a sample of the Shakeology I had just prepared. Since there weren’t a lot of people, everyone was able to taste both flavors. Everyone seemed to really like the taste of both kinds, and they had lots of questions about how I prepared it and how I made it so thick. That’s one of the things about Shakeology. Once you taste it for yourself, you are surprised how good it is. There are a lot of meal replacement drinks out there that really don’t taste all that great, but Shakeology is definitely not one of them!

A few people had to leave after the Shakeology sampling, but the few people that stayed, decided it would be fun to play another couple of games. So we played a game called Exercise Trivia, that included multiple choice questions about exercise and going to the gym and what is best to do for weight loss. I hope my guests were able to learn a little bit more about best practice exercise in a fun way! The winner got a prize, the same as the first prize.

Then we played a third game called Calorie Count Trivia. In this game, the participants had to decided out of two different kinds of food, which had the fewer amount of calories. For example, one of the questions was “Does and apple or a chocolate chip cookie have fewer calories?” Some of the questions were pretty tricky. One that tripped up most people was whether a 3 ounce steak or 3 ounces of salmon had fewer calories. I thought it was the steak, because salmon has a bad rap for being one of the less healthy fish. But I was wrong! The salmon still had fewer calories than the steak! Surprising! Again, the winner of the game got a prize!

We also had a raffle, where everyone wrote their names on a slip of paper, and the one I drew got a prize.

If you have never done a Shakeology Shake and Share party for your Beachbody business, you should truly consider it. It’s a great way to let your friends and family know about your business, and for them to try out Shakeology for themselves and taste how good it is.

If you have already tried Shakeology, but don’t have a bag of it for yourself, go get some today and start feeling the health benefits of this great drink!

Homeschool Mom With No Time to Work Out

There are so many people I know who constantly tell me, “I would work out if only I had the time.” This used to be my excuse, too. And I felt like it was a good one. But recently, I’ve changed my tune. I no longer tell myself, “I have no time to work out. I’m a homeschool mom!” Instead I use the phrase, “I have to work out. I’m a homeschool mom!”

It all started before this year’s homeschooling began. In July, our family of seven went on a great vacation. We were constantly on the go, which was great fun, but was really tiring too. I found myself dead tired by the end of the day. Now, granted I had just given birth to my son 3 months prior to the vacation, but still, I felt like I should be able to keep up a little better than I was.

Homeschool Mom in Training

Daughter doing her "millions of math problems"

Looking forward a couple months to when I would once again be a homeschool mom, instead of just a mommy enjoying summer with her children, I knew that I would need to boost my energy levels somehow. If you are a homeschool mom, you know what I am talking about. Homeschooling can be very rewarding, but it is usually exhausting. The energy level required to keep your kids excited about what they are learning is high. And that’s not even including the energy needed to keep yourself calm, while your child decides to whine in protest about the “millions of math problems” she has to complete for the day!

So I decided to make a change in the way I was treating and feeding my body. I knew that telling myself that I had no time to work out was only adding to the problem. I was basically just giving myself an excuse. There’s a saying out there somewhere that says if it is important enough, you will find the time to do it.

I could no longer use the excuse of being a homeschool mom, either. Sure, I have lots of things on my plate. But will I ever NOT have lots of things on my plate? I’m pretty sure the answer is “no”. Something will always come up. And I will always be able to make an excuse for having no time to work out.

So late in July, I started working out regularly. At first, it was pretty easy. I’m not saying the work outs were easy…. they were really tough! But I am saying that it was pretty easy to get myself downstairs to do the work outs, because it was still summer and our schedule was still pretty free. I managed to get myself into the habit of working out, before the homeschool schedule started to put the squeeze on my time.

For the first few weeks of the homeschool year, I forced myself to wake up at 6am, so that I could get my work out in before my role as homeschool mom started for the day. It wasn’t easy pulling myself out of that nice, warm, comfortable bed. And if you don’t know me, you don’t realize that I am definitely NOT a morning person! But I had made a commitment, and I had already started feeling the great results of more energy that had resulted from the month of exercise I had completed.

That getting up in the morning was a great schedule, but didn’t seem to work this past week. My now 6 month old, has gotten into a weird sleeping schedule lately. He wakes up around midnight and stays wide awake for about 2 to 3 hours. Not good for the mommy who’s trying to get some well-earned shut-eye!

It would be super easy for me to say, “Oh, well, I guess I can’t get up and work out today.” But, because of my new motto of “I have to workout. I’m a homeschool mom!” I have been able to keep my commitment to exercise. If I decide to sleep in until 8am (or sometimes even 9am!) then I just make the time to work out in the afternoon after all my kids have finished their schoolwork and I have put my homeschool mom role back on the shelf for the day.

If you are having trouble keeping an exercise schedule and find you are giving yourself the excuse of no time to work out, think again. If a homeschool mom of four, with a 6 month old baby can do it, so can you!

SEO Friendly Blogs Are the Most Popular

SEO FriendlyHave you ever wondered how your favorite blog sites are able to get to page #1 on Google or Yahoo or Bing? Do you aspire to do so with your blog as well? If you are trying to get more traffic for your blog, being on the first page of search engines is the best, and cheapest way to do so. Here are some blog tips you can put into practice to make your blog SEO friendly. (SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization)

Think of an SEO Friendly Topic

If you want your blog to get noticed, you need to be writing about something that people are interested in. Your life and the drama that you are going through may be very interesting to you, but is it really something that other people would want to read? If you do choose to write about your personal life, make sure you offer tips on how to overcome the problems or challenges that you are going through.

An easy way to see if your topic is SEO friendly is to type it into a search box on a search engine. If the results (seen just under the search box in a light grey type on Google) are greater than around 100,000, then you know that there are plenty of people searching for information on your topic.

Make Your Title SEO Friendly

After you have written your blog, which should ideally be around 300-500 words long, you are ready to choose a title. A title that is eye-catching is great and will cause people to want to click on your blog to see what you have to say. But equally important is making the title something that search engines will love.

To do this, you need to make sure your blog title is closely related to your content. Be sure to place a keyword or two in your title so that search engines, as well as readers, will know right away what they can expect to read about in your blog.

The best blog titles are those that combine both reader friendly and SEO friendly components. If you can appeal to humans as well as robots, your blog will be on a fast track to the first page of search engines.

Use SEO Friendly Keywords

Keywords were mentioned in the above point, and if you are new to Search Engine Optimization, you are probably wondering what a keyword is. Simply put, it is the word or phrase that a user would type into the search box on a search engine to find information on a topic.

Knowing this, you can imagine how important it is to have SEO friendly keywords in your blog content. If you use the keywords in your content, readers will be clear about the information you are providing, and search engines will be happy because they will be clear about your content and will know how to list them in their search queries.

But how do you know how many times your keyword should appear in your content? A good rule of thumb is about 1 to 2 percent. Make sure you are not “keyword stuffing,” which is filling up your content with your keywords in an unnatural way. This is bad on two levels: people don’t like reading something that doesn’t flow well, and search engines frown upon it, making your rank in the search pages go down. That’s the opposite of what you are trying to achieve, so be sure to use your keywords in an SEO friendly way.

Make a Meta Title That is SEO Friendly

Now that you have your content written and have a great title to go along with it, including your SEO friendly keywords in just the right places, you are ready to create what is called a meta title. This is what search engines will display when someone makes a search for the topic you have written about.

This title is just as important, if not more important, than your actual blog title. This title obviously needs to be keyword rich, but it also needs to be extremely clear for the reader what they will find when they click on this title.

Readers don’t like to land on a page that has nothing to do with the title they clicked on! I’m sure you have experienced this yourself. You search for a term and find some titles that seem to match, but then when you go to that page, you have to really search around the site to find what you were originally looking for. That can be a real time killer and can be very frustrating!

So make sure your SEO friendly meta title is specific to the topic you have written about.

Write an SEO Friendly Meta Description

Along with the meta title, the meta description is what you see on search engines when you type in a keyword. It is the little one or two sentence blurb that you see right underneath the meta title.

This is an essential part of making your blog popular. If you can write something here that will cause people to want to open your blog, you have won half the battle. Give an interesting tidbit that you will discuss in further depth within your blog. Ask a question that draws people to need to know the answer, and then answer it in your blog.

Don’t forget the importance of making it SEO friendly, though. By putting a keyword or two in the meta description, you are letting the search engines know, once again, exactly what is in your content.

Above all, enjoy writing your blog and be yourself! If you are having fun, that will spill out into your writing, and people will be drawn to read what you have to say. :)

What is God Like for Kids?

What is God like for kids

My five year old with his younger brother

I often wonder, “What is God like for kids?” Well, yesterday I got a little glimpse of this mystery.

I was taking my kids to AWANA, a Bible-based youth group for kids, and my eight year old daughter was trying to memorize just one more Bible verse before we got there so she could say it to her AWANA leader.

We were trying to think of creative ways for her to remember it, so we were coming up with some silly ways to say one of the phrases. First, she decided to say it like a mouse. So she raised her voice to a high pitch and squeaked out the phrase.

Then, one of her brothers suggested that she say it like a baby. She started saying “Goo goo ga ga….” and then said the verse in a baby tone. She really had all of us cracking up with laughter!

There were quite a few other suggestions on how to say the memory verse, but after a while I decided to ask her to say it like God would say it.

Immediately, my five year old shot his hand up into the air and yelled, “I know, I know!!” So I let him go first to give his rendition of what God would sound like.

Now, like most people, probably, I was expecting him to start in with a very low, somber voice: you know, like something you would hear in the movies. But instead, he got very quiet. In a very small whisper, he said the verse, and then looked up at me very confidently through the rear view mirror.

I kind of sat there stunned, because I know that I had not yet taught him that God speaks to us in a whisper. After getting over the initial shock and wonder at my little five year old reminding me of the way God speaks to us, I congratulated him and encouraged him in his correct answer.

So what is God like for kids, before their innocent little minds are bombarded with all of Hollywood’s ideas? I think He must be a kind whisperer, Who comforts them and keeps them safe. He is not a taskmaster or an overbearing ruler. It’s nice to remember that God wants us to be still and listen to Him as he quietly shows us His love.

The next time you ponder about what is God like for kids, consider asking a young child in your life. Be prepared to be surprised with the answer!

If you have any experiences with one of your young children surprising you with a Biblical truth, I’d love to hear about it! Please share it in the comment box.

The Homeschool Advantage – Five Benefits of Homeschooling

Homeschool Advantage

My Oldest Daughter, Grace Doing Math

Are you frustrated with the results that your children are getting through their public or private schooling? Are you concerned about the education that they are getting? Have you heard of the homeschool advantage?

Consider the benefits of homeschooling. When you commit to giving your child the best education through homeschooling, you will have what is called the homeschool advantage. Many colleges are more than excited to have homeschool students enroll in their classes, because they have found that these children often have a better education than students of other forms of schooling.

As a graduate of homeschooling, as well as a homeschooling parent, I have a little experience in this area and have listed here the top five advantages of homeschooling:

Homeschool Advantage #1

One of my favorite benefits of homeschooling is the flexible schedule that it allows. I love being able to change things around when the need arises. There are many examples I could give, but just recently our homeschool schedule has had to endure a few changes.

I have a 5 month old, and as all mothers know, babies at this age just don’t have the whole “nighttime is for sleeping” thing figured out quite yet. So the last few nights here have been pretty much sleepless ones for me.

Normally, I try to get the school day started at around 7:30 or 8 in the morning. But because of the strange sleeping schedule, I’ve changed that to more like a 10:30 to 11am start.

Sure, the kids get their schoolwork finished a little later than I’d like, but it is a trade-off I’m willing to accept. If I can get just an hour of extra sleep, my attitude and level of patience is so much better.

Homeschool Advantage #2

Because I want the best for my children, I want to be able to choose their curriculum. Why should I let a teacher or a education counsel do that for me? They may want their school to do well academically, but I want my CHILD to do well academically.

I know there are exceptions to this. Not every school is only focused on the school’s scores. But with homeschooling, you are able to pick and choose exactly what you want to teach your kids.

As a Christian, this homeschool advantage is vital to me. For example, I do not want my children to be taught that we evolved from apes. I want them to learn all the theories on the origin of the universe and to be able to discern for themselves the most logical theory (not to mention the most Biblical).

Ultimately, I want to be able to use the curriculum that best suits my children and their learning strengths. In a school system, this is just not possible. Every child in a classroom is taught from the same books in a school setting, whether or not they are actually learning well from that teaching style.

Homeschool Advantage #3

That leads me to a third benefit of homeschooling, which is being able to let the kids learn at their own pace. If you have more than one child, you know how different each of your children are. The learning abilities of each child are as different as their personalities.

This is abundantly clear in my family with my two oldest children. One is in 3rd grade and the other in 2nd. The 3rd grader has always been an extremely fast learner. She was reading on her own by the end of 1st grade. She was able to do all of her assignments almost completely on her own, with just a few questions here and there.

However, my 2nd grader is still needing me to read almost all of his assignments to him. He is able to do the work, but he is just not at the reading level that I had gotten used to with my 3rd grader. So instead of stressing about it, I’ve learned to go at his pace. He is improving daily with his reading abilities, just at a slower pace than his sister.

In a “normal” school setting, my son would have been held back a grade, or worse, put into a special education class. I know that just being in a class like that or being held back would have really hurt his self-image. He thrives better on encouragement and one-on-one guidance, which would not be available to him in a school setting. So this homeschool advantage is invaluable for my son.

Homeschool Advantage #4

Does your family travel a lot? My family doesn’t any more, but we used to with my husband’s old job. He used to go to Food Conventions to find vendors for the gas station he was a managing. Because my kids are homeschooled, we were able to have the freedom to travel with him to these conventions and spend fun time at the hotels.

My children’s favorite part was being able to sample all the yummy food, and of course being able to swim in the indoor pools at the hotels! My favorite part was being able to continue their education while still enjoying spending time together as a family. We would bring the books we needed for the few days we were gone. The kids were given the incentive to finish their schoolwork so that they could go play in the pool. It worked like a charm!

If my children had been in a “regular” school, we would have missed out on these fun times. We would have had to stay behind as my husband fulfilled his role as manager, because I would not be able to just pull them out of their classes for several weeks out of the year.

Homeschool Advantage #5

Because of the homeschool advantage of being able to travel, the added bonus of family closeness is nurtured. We don’t have to be apart, because we can bring school with us.

Now, my kids are still pretty young at this point, so I don’t experience what families with older children do. My kids are not running off in all different directions with their extracurricular activities. But that is not really what I am talking about as far as family closeness.

What I am referring to is what happens when the children are grown and have lives of their own. How does homeschooling affect these years? Well, since I was homeschooled as a child, I can attest to the closeness I continue to feel towards my parents as an adult.

I didn’t experience the peer pressure of other children telling me how my parents were “stupid” and that they didn’t know anything. I grew up with a healthy relationship with my parents, understanding that they knew what was best for me and were doing their best to give me a homeschool advantage!

I hope this list has given you some encouragement, whether you are thinking of starting homeschooling or you are a veteran homeschooler. Knowing the advantages of homeschooling can be a great reminder that the work we are doing for our children is totally worth it!

If you are a homeschooler and have experienced some benefits of homeschooling in your life or your children’s lives, please share them in the comment box. I’d love to hear your story!
